IFA Achieves Reduction in Employment Costs
From the 3rd May 2010, a new Employment Regulation Order (ERO) for Agriculture will reduce wage rates and increase flexibility.
In April 2009, the IFA set up a working group to review the operation of the Agricultural Workers Joint Labour Committee, the body that regulates rates of pay and conditions of employment for the industry.
The working group submitted a proposal to the committee and after intensive negotiations a new ERO was agreed for the industry.
The amended order includes the following:
- A reduction in the hourly rate of pay to €9.10, which will be frozen until the 31st December 2010
- Saturday will be paid at the same rate as any other day, (elimination of current Overtime rate of Time and a Third after 1.00 p.m.)
- Sunday Premium pay will be at a rate of Time and 1/3 (rather than Time and 2/3)
- Hours worked per week is a maximum of 48 hours; however this can be averaged over a 6 month period
For an employer with weekend workers, it is estimated that savings of between €40 and €50 per employee per week can be achieved, when compared with the current ERO (minimum hourly rate of €9.33 per hour).
The revised ERO was registered by the Labour court on the 3rd May 2010.
In partnership with Human Resource Services, the IFA have set up an employment service to provide information and support to members on employment issues.
